There are excursions offered to other beaches from the cruise line. You can also catch a cab to other beaches around the island, which will be less crowded. The first thing that you’ll notice when you visit the Grand Turk port is that your ship is close to the beach… as in real close. The dock sits out only about 400 feet from shore, meaning the ship towers over the port area. The Grand Turk Cruise Center is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the Caribbean.
Near this spot at the back of the port is also where you’ll find the port exit to grab a taxi to explore the rest of Grand Turk. Like most cruise ports in the Caribbean, Grand Turk features a dedicated port area that’s enclosed and offers a number of amenities to cruise passengers. If you want to learn more about the intriguing history of the Turks & Caicos Islands, you might want to visit the national museum located on Grand Turk. Gibbs Cay is a tiny, uninhabited island on the eastern side of Grand Turk.

To get to the best beach on the island, you will need to take a taxi to Governor’s beach. At the cruise center, you will find a big beautiful swimming pool. Book a poolside cabana and enjoy private time away from the crowds and a dedicated waiter. Here you can swim and hang out with other shipmates, enjoying the tropical magic that is Grand Turk. The largest salt formations can be seen at Hawkes Nest Salina, located near the cruise port, or at the Red Salina salt pond.
There are also open-air trucks available to cruise around and learn about the town. If you find yourself in Grand Turk for the day, take advantage of all of the water excursions available! This beach is home to many surrounding restaurants, hotels, and shopping.
The city on Grand Turk is called Cockburn Town and if you want a feel for the “real” Grand Turk, it’s a neat place to visit, albeit a bit spread out. A good spot to start your visit is the Turks & Caicos National Museum. The area north of the pier (to the left as you enter) features a sandier bottom that’s more forgiving on your feet.
Carnival Cruise Line must have noticed this too when they decided to turn the island into a cruise port in 2006. Carnival Corp.'s cruise terminal is a destination in its own right, with retail shops, a recreation area on the beach and a huge pool. The pier can accommodate two mega-ships, theoretically from any of the many cruise lines under Carnival Corp.'s umbrella, including Princess, Carnival and Holland America. But traffic is sparse, and with a population of about 5,000, most people know one another's names. Grand Turk & Caicos has always been one of the most popular ports of call for Carnival Cruise Line.
The Turks and Caicos National Museum offers tours year-round, a perfect spot for the history buff. The Cruise Center Complex is just one of the best things you can do in Grand Turk. This complex is a large open-air area with tons of excursion booths, gift shops, and restaurants. Carnival Corporation’s Grand Turk Cruise Center consists of 18 acres of shopping, beaches and endless recreational activities located right where your ship docks.
John Glenn’s first step on dry land after returning to Earth was on Grand Turk, and a U.S. Navy Base that was in operation on the island at the time, NAVFAC 104, helped in the recovery operations. One of the exciting attractions in the Cruise Center is the FlowRider. Water is jetted over a preformed cushioned surface to create an artificial surfing attraction.
