For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. If you’re visiting Grand Turk, there are some tips and things to know that can make your trip even better. We mentioned some of these above, but in case you missed them, we’ve included them here as well. Not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with a heart condition. Most ATV excursions leave from right outside of the Cruise Center. You’ll be outfitted with a helmet and goggles and your own four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle.

Visit Historic Cockburn Town

You’ll also learn everything you need to know about visiting the Grand Turk cruise port for the day and get answers to commonly asked questions. The cruise port is designed to be a little center of luxury for your port day. There are amenities such as restaurants, spas, and if you love shopping, there are gift shops and local jewelry stores on the port. If a slow horseback ride along a white sandy beach is on your to-do list, Grand Turk might just be the perfect place to try it. Available as a ship’s shore excursion,  it’s necessary to sign up at the beginning of your cruise to avoid a sold-out disappointment. On the west side of the island between the cruise port and Cockburn Town is Governor’s Beach.

If you want to explore the island on your Grand Turk vacation, visit the numerous historical sites like Her Majesty’s prison, the Light House or the Turks and Caicos museum. If you are the active type book shore excursions and enjoy great diving and snorkeling spots, or just lay on Governor’s beach, the most beautiful beach on the island. Some reports quote Glenn as saying it "must be paradise" when he spotted the 40 coral islands from space.

Boat Cruise and Fishing Tours

Exploring the sights, town, and beaches of Grand Turk is one of our recommended ways of spending the day on Grand Turk. Unlike many other Caribbean vacation cruise stops, Grand Turk is a very small island, and offers a completely different atmosphere than better-known destinations. There isn’t a crowded city or waterfront, just a laid-back little town with great beaches and a little British Bermudian Colonial heritage. The beautiful Cruise Center Beach fronts the complex, and is one of the nicest cruise port beaches in the region. The 2010-built, 2106-passenger Holland America ship sailed from Port Everglades on December 11 for a 7-day cruise, with the first port of call being Grand Turk on December 13.

Learn About Local History at the Caicos National Museum

At the Grand Turk Cruise Center, you can sign up for a 30-minute body- or knee-boarding session on the FlowRider, which simulates the feel of ocean waves. Enjoy the ride and don’t forget to smile—photographers are on hand to capture your moment of glory, or perhaps a wipe-out to laugh about later. Your guide will take you past local attractions including the Ridge Trail, Grand Turk lighthouse, and the North Creek Bird watching area. If you’re looking for a non-water excursion on Grand Turk, you can see another side of the island on an ATV tour. Cruisers could easily spend the whole day in Margaritaville enjoying the laid-back, Caribbean vibes. Be sure to try the nachos, burgers, jerk salmon and conch fritters, and swim up to the bar for a signature Margarita.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Enjoy an array of exhibits, including the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest European shipwreck excavated in the western hemisphere. You’ll also see an exhibit dedicated to the first inhabitants of Grand Turk, the Tainos. You’ll see how they lived and what they contributed to the island to make it what it is today. One of the main attractions at the Cruise Center Complex is an immense lagoon-like swimming pool.

You can find Caribbean cruises to book including the Carnival Cruise Line destination of Grand Turk. Once you have learned to use the Segway, you can tour through the historic district and explore the Bermudian-style architecture along with the historic churches. If you are tired of the beach scene and just want an adrenaline-packed escape to a tropical forest, then this excursion is for you. ATV’s are fun and what better way to see the whole island, which isn’t that big than to blaze through it at high speeds on challenging nature trails. Once you are at the port head over to the Margaritaville, it’s just one and a half minutes from the pier. Once there you will be greeted by a large yellow parrot statue at the entrance.

Significant Historical Occurrences on the Island

There are excursions offered to other beaches from the cruise line. You can also catch a cab to other beaches around the island, which will be less crowded. The first thing that you’ll notice when you visit the Grand Turk port is that your ship is close to the beach… as in real close. The dock sits out only about 400 feet from shore, meaning the ship towers over the port area. The Grand Turk Cruise Center is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the Caribbean.

Near this spot at the back of the port is also where you’ll find the port exit to grab a taxi to explore the rest of Grand Turk. Like most cruise ports in the Caribbean, Grand Turk features a dedicated port area that’s enclosed and offers a number of amenities to cruise passengers. If you want to learn more about the intriguing history of the Turks & Caicos Islands, you might want to visit the national museum located on Grand Turk. Gibbs Cay is a tiny, uninhabited island on the eastern side of Grand Turk.

To enjoy more of the island, head to the northern direction from cruise center beach and enjoy beaches in a less populated area. To get to the best beach on the island, you will need to take a taxi to Governor’s beach. At the cruise center, you will find a big beautiful swimming pool. Book a poolside cabana and enjoy private time away from the crowds and a dedicated waiter. Here you can swim and hang out with other shipmates, enjoying the tropical magic that is Grand Turk. The largest salt formations can be seen at Hawkes Nest Salina, located near the cruise port, or at the Red Salina salt pond.

There are also open-air trucks available to cruise around and learn about the town. If you find yourself in Grand Turk for the day, take advantage of all of the water excursions available! This beach is home to many surrounding restaurants, hotels, and shopping.

The city on Grand Turk is called Cockburn Town and if you want a feel for the “real” Grand Turk, it’s a neat place to visit, albeit a bit spread out. A good spot to start your visit is the Turks & Caicos National Museum. The area north of the pier (to the left as you enter) features a sandier bottom that’s more forgiving on your feet.

Carnival Cruise Line must have noticed this too when they decided to turn the island into a cruise port in 2006. Carnival Corp.'s cruise terminal is a destination in its own right, with retail shops, a recreation area on the beach and a huge pool. The pier can accommodate two mega-ships, theoretically from any of the many cruise lines under Carnival Corp.'s umbrella, including Princess, Carnival and Holland America. But traffic is sparse, and with a population of about 5,000, most people know one another's names. Grand Turk & Caicos has always been one of the most popular ports of call for Carnival Cruise Line.

The Turks and Caicos National Museum offers tours year-round, a perfect spot for the history buff. The Cruise Center Complex is just one of the best things you can do in Grand Turk. This complex is a large open-air area with tons of excursion booths, gift shops, and restaurants. Carnival Corporation’s Grand Turk Cruise Center consists of 18 acres of shopping, beaches and endless recreational activities located right where your ship docks.

John Glenn’s first step on dry land after returning to Earth was on Grand Turk, and a U.S. Navy Base that was in operation on the island at the time, NAVFAC 104, helped in the recovery operations. One of the exciting attractions in the Cruise Center is the FlowRider. Water is jetted over a preformed cushioned surface to create an artificial surfing attraction.

Enjoy a tour of the island all the way into the shallow waters of the ocean on a horse’s back. The horses are handpicked for you from the ranch according to your preferences, fear, and comfort riding on horses. If you are up for an active excursion, book paddle boarding, and kayaking excursions and explore the clear waters of the peaceful north creek. The kayaks have a clear bottom that lets you view the action under the water. The island is uninhabited and bears beautiful beaches on its west coast.
